Located in my wife's hometown of Anaconda where Marcus Daley and the Anaconda Copper Co. ran a Smelter operation for over 100 years and provided the bulk of the Copper used to electrify the U. S. and as evidenced by the huge black sand slag piles east of the Anaconda town limits and at the base of the Washoe Smelter operation. On the downside, vast quantities of arsenic and lead were unleashed on the land between Anaconda and Butte where the Copper ore was mined. Few trees grow in this region because of the poisonous effects of the arsenic. Jack Niklaus and his golf design team came into Anaconda in 1994, twenty two years after all Smelter operations ceased and used innovative techniques to remediate the area where the Old Works Smelter was operated and built a championship quality golf course that winds it's way thru the historic processes of the Old Works Smelter facility and even incorporated the unique black slag sand in the bunkers of the golf course. Because this slag sand is high in iron oxide content this slag sand is denser than regular sand and consequently the golf ball sits higher in this sand and it seems easier to blast your golf ball out of the bunkers around the golf course. The clubhouse is first rate as is the food and service at Jack's Diner. The 2 new golf simulators make Old Works GC a year round operation that is very affordable and pleasant. You can even XC ski the course in the winter time as long as you avoid the greens...

Scenic with great vistas. Difficult but fair with fast greens and closely cut, green fairways. Would definitely play again.
