Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course
About the club
This course was the first by architect Stanley Thompson in an alpine setting, and it earned high praise from the legendary Alister MacKenzie. The Jasper Park is often compared to Banff Springs, but the topography here is even more dramatic. In typical Thompson style, the course fits well into its native environment, which in this case produces hidden dangers and unpredictable fairways. The par 3 9th, known as the Cleopatra because some golfers make out a recumbent lady in its outline, descends some eighty feet over its 231 yards. With a 6700-yard length, the course is not long, but the short game is engaging on holes that have such colorful names as the Bad Baby (a par 3 only 138 yards long) and 2 or 20. Many decades after it was designed, the Jasper Park remains a standout thanks to the brilliant, if idiosyncratic, design by Thompson.
