About the club
Founded in 1899 and remodeled by Dan Soutar in 1916, this course is one of Australia's top fifty. It is not particularly long, so the main challenge off the tees is to keep the ball out of the trees and bunkers that help to define the course. Although many Australian courses resemble the heathland tracts of Surrey and Berkshire in England, albeit with different vegetation, the ground here never gets as firm, so the old bump and run doesn't work as well, and approach shots must be played through the air. Greens are receptive, and usually fast and smooth for putting. Wind can be a factor, and the holes are arranged so that play into the wind alternates with downwind play. Though the holes are a little repetitive, it is worth the effort to try to secure an invitation from a member to this quiet, historic, and always well-kept course.
