Huntingdale Golf Club
About the club
Though perhaps a bit less celebrated than the famous classic courses in the Melbourne Sandbelt, the Huntingdale all the same shares much with them. Laid out late in the 1930s based on plans by Hugh Alison, who worked with architect Harry Colt, the course has undergone extensive renovations but still shows Colt's influence. The ground that it covers is not particularly extensive, but it is still able to offer the pros a demanding challenge, as it has regularly done for players in the Australian Masters beginning in 1979. Early on the world's stars came, Ballesteros, Faldo, Langer, Lyle, Woosman and so on, and usually ended up facing down Greg Norman, for better or worse. The spacious fairways planted in couch grass, the carefully positioned bunkering and the ample, rolling greens—which are some of the quickest and most true to be found anywhere—are perfectly maintained for the annual competitions.
