About the club
Newcastle, an industrial and mining center in New South Wales, is the hometown of Australian star Jack Newton, whose development as a golfer owes something to the proximity of this fine course. Little changed since being founded a century ago, the course unfolds over rolling sand dunes surrounded by native forest that is alive with flora and fauna such as eucalyptus trees, kookaburras and kangaroos that takes the place of the heather and gorse that line similar fairways back in England. The length is not great, at 6200 meters, but the course is well balanced and calls for care at the tee-off and in navigating to the greens. Indeed, some of the tee shots are obscured, a rarity on contemporary courses, and players will encounter slopes, carefully positioned bunkers, and tough raised greens. Though it is a little off the beaten path, don't hesitate to take your clubs to Newcastle.
