About the club
In a 1926 visit to the Royal Adelaide Golf Club, Alister MacKenzie praised the site as "a most delightful combination of sand dunes and fir trees, a most unusual combination even at the best seaside courses. None that I have seen possess such magnificent sand craters." English players will be reminded of the Formby, albeit warmer. The sixteen Australian Amateurs and nine Australian Opens hosted by the club are ample evidence its standing among Melbourne's finest. This is more of a links course, however, and with a length of 6619 meters off the Championship tees, and a full 6246 meters off the men's, it is a greater test than it might appear. A local train chugs right through the course every half hour, but creates more atmosphere than distraction. It is impossible to select standouts among the excellent holes, which are a must for any player who comes to South Australia.
