Royal Hobart Golf Club
About the club
No Tasmanian club can match the Royal Hobart (though the recently completed Barnbougle Dunes is offering some competition). Everything here is crafted to appeal to the "club man"; so, for example, socks worn with shorts must be white and low-cut, all apparel must be free of advertising, and there is a dress code for the clubhouse. The course was laid out in the early Sixties by Vernon Morcom, who defended the quick greens with some eighty carefully positioned bunkers. Experienced players can earn a decent over holes that hold the interest and encourage repeated visits. Maintenance is a premium here, with a million Australian dollars having been invested recently in irrigation alone. Trees line the way from the gates to a clubhouse that is particularly fetching in the fall. A pair of roomy driving ranges and a superb driving range round out the experience, which is limited to club members and guests.
