Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club
About the club
In 1999 Greg Norman, who is now one of golf's top designers, managed to turn a swampy, unpromising piece of land into an outstanding course. The "Lakes" name is fitting, since water is the main hazard for many of the holes. In addition to water, wind also frequently comes into play. As two-time champion at the British Open, Norman has incorporated features of English, Scottish and Irish courses into his holes here. Another obvious influence is the Melbourne Sandbelt, the region that is home to his own country's best courses. Here at Sanctuary Lakes, Norman has made the fairways wide and the bunkers imposing, and the greens expansive and rolling. Maintenance is of course as superb as would expect in luxurious developments like this one. Especially given the fact that the course was built on a relatively sparse and delicate piece of land, Sanctuary Lakes has quite a links feel.
