The Australian Golf Club
About the club
Founded over 100 years ago, the Australian is one of the country's most prestigious clubs. Alister MacKenzie's contribution to the design during his visit in the 1920s is evident in the bunkering. Then in 1978, on a visit to play the Australian Open, Jack Nicklaus oversaw extensive renovations at the behest of Kerry Packer, a longtime friend and patron of the club. Nicklaus added his signature water hazards and steep-faced bunkers to test the good golfers, though traditionalists lament the loss of some of the charm for which Australian courses are known. In any case, the Australian is a regular venue for Australian Opens and a fine test for all golfers. Long at 6610 meters off the back, the course can play even longer in the constant wind. Amenities include a modern, beautifully appointed clubhouse (thanks to a fire that destroyed the old one) and, for a city course, great practice facilities.
