The Grand Golf Club
About the club
Initially built by Greg Norman and financed by investors from Japan, the Grand opened for a single day in 1990 before lack of funding forced its close, after which it went neglected for five years. A group of Australian entrepreneurs then purchased the course and reenlisted Norman to restore it for a second opening as a private club two years later. The refurbished Grand soon attracted the Australian Open (which Stuart Appleby won), and is now considered one of the best courses in Australia. At 6114 meters, it features no great length, yet remains challenging. Water can be a factor, especially on the 3rd hole, where lesser players may elect to lay up, and the winding Nerang River occasionally figures in the play. Other holes are a test in their own right, particularly the 9th. From the service to the clubhouse and the amenities to the maintenance, everything here is outstanding.
