Worldwide, there are not many places where the proper soil for links courses is accessible, but Australia has an abundance that is only beginning to be exploited in the west of the country. The outstanding representative at Madurah is the Cut, and Kennedy Bay, halfway to Perth, is a close second, though a road separates the course from the beach. The designers were Roger Mackay, Western Australia's best player for over a decade, Ian Baker Finch, winner of the Open at Royal Birkdale, and Michael Coates, who seems to have taken care of the logistics. A few contemporary aspects don't quite fit in, namely the unnaturally circular pot bunkers and a couple of greens exposed to the whims of the wind. On the other hand, every nine makes the most of the closeness of the sea, and we can look forward to seeing top pros compete at this big course.
