The National Golf Club - Old Course
About the club
The Old was the first of the National's three superb courses in its complex on the Mornington Peninsula outside Melbourne. David English and Frank Williams, who founded the Masters, started the club at the 1985, and Robert Trent Jones II laid out the course a few years later. It is hard to imagine a better location for a links-style course, where every hole offers a thrill. The 4th is a good example, a mid-length par 3 that is stunning to look at, with a green defended by a pond, and that will keep players guessing about which club to use when the wind blows. The 7th, a par 3 like the 4th, is the signature hole because of the breathtaking vistas that frame a quite trying shot at the tee. The National's three courses play off each others' strengths, but considerable fortitude is needed to take them on all at once.
