Mid Ocean Club
About the club
Although Bermuda lies a thousand miles north of the Caribbean, it features many of the same characteristics of the islands there. Golf, however, reached the island long before the West Indies, owing to its status as an important port of call for trans-Atlantic shipping. An executive with Furness Withy Ltd. looking to increase passengers on his ships with tourism hit upon golf as an attraction, and enlisted Charles Blair Macdonald, a leading American player of the time, to undertake the daunting task of finding a location for the course and a hotel. The great challenges involved are still evident at Mid Ocean, from the precipitous climbs and uphill play to greens that are almost blind. But if the island's dimensions preclude an enormous golf complex, there is nevertheless much to appreciate in how the course works within its constraints, and in the ocean views that enliven some of the holes.
