The Desert Contrary to what the name might suggest, The Vintage Club in the Coachella Valley outside of Palm Springs is not merely the centerpiece of a golf community development, but it establishes a new mark for design excellence. Now in their fourth decade, the pair of courses that Tom Fazio designed for the club, the Mountain and the Desert, have become recognized as two of the best in the state and even in the US generally. The experience begins with a striking entryway leading to an imposing clubhouse that is topped by little Egyptian-style pyramids. The location at the foot of Eisenhower Mountain helps to protect the course from breezes blowing in off the desert that gives the course its name. The layout is straightforward, and makes excellent use of water and bunkering. Precision pays here as it always does, and there are some really nice shots to be made. The Mountain The Mountain Course was designed as a links-type course, 'playable' for a wide variety of golfers. Carved into the Santa Rosa Mountains, here fairway contour at the landing areas and the complexity of angles on the greens lay the most significant role in course design. The primary image building elements are established through the creation of spectacular views to the surrounding mountains; the continuous influence of lakes, streams and waterfalls; and the interplay of a wide variety of trees throughout the fairways and at the green edge. Key features include fairway moguls, pot bunkers, deep grassy hollows and immaculately tended flowerbeds serving to provide the finishing touches on the distinctive character of this now world-famous course
