TPC Harding Park
About the club
The original course at Harding Park in San Francisco was constructed in the mid-1920s by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting, and by the 1940s was hosting PGA Tour events. Over the next few decades, however, the facility became increasingly neglected. A campaign to resurrect the course managed to overcome numerous hurdles in order to secure permission and public funding to the tune of $16 million. The resulting 6584-meter course, which opened in 2003, is reminiscent of a classic links, with soil that is sandy, modest length and proximity to the sea. The layout is nicely balanced: tight fairways play to diminutive greens, all set amid mature evergreens. The closing holes are particularly striking; the 15th through the 17th extend along a cliff overlooking Lake Merced, and the dogleg 18th leads back home. The course has seen considerable tournament play, and became part of the TPC network in 2010.
