The Masters During the course-building spree in 1990s China, many club owners brought in the world's best-known designers, but the Hillview, a 36-hole club an hour and a half outside Hong Kong, bucked this trend and enlisted the then relatively young and unheralded American Jim Engh. In the time since, this architect has achieved wide recognition for his work, being named the 2003 Architect of the Year by Golf Digest, and has clients worldwide. It was his Masters and Open courses here that set the foundation for this success. The highly contoured, commanding course has ample fairways and bold bunkers comprised of towering traps and little holes together with well-designed water hazards. The result is a course that will test players while at the same time delighting them. The Hillview's reputation is based, not on attracting tournament play, but on the sheer quality of its golf, not to mention its top-notch clubhouse.
