Shanghai Sheshan International Golf Club
About the club
This club is the site of the most rewarding championship in Asia, the $7.5 million HSBC, which makes it one of the more prominent, and more prestigious, Chinese clubs this side of Hong Kong. Sheshan is named from a nearby Catholic church, and is set on hilly ground on the south of Shanghai. The Singapore-based design concern Nelson and Haworth, known for its work throughout the country over the past couple of decades, was responsible for laying out the course and its iconic clubhouse, done up in the Tuscan style. The course made a name for itself with a bold and intriguing design that incorporates abundant bunkers, a chain of massive ponds and sculpted (and always immaculately groomed) greens of bent grass. The 288-yard, short par 4 16th is the signature hole here, where players must summon up an epic tee shot and confront a submerged quarry all along the right.
