About the club
Since opening in 1985, the Shenzhen Golf Club has welcomed players to an island of golf amid the burgeoning metropolis of China's fifth-largest city. The celebrated Japanese architect Isao Aoki designed the first course here in 1985 to serve Korean and Japanese financiers. Aoki's not particularly challenging course was updated by the team of Nelson & Haworth from Singapore over a decade later with the addition of another nine and improvements to the fairways and greens. The reworked A + B championship course is considerably more trying than the original layout, and has attracted the Volvo China Open, won here in 2005 by Paul Casey following a duel with fellow Briton Oliver Wilson; it is also the home course for Chinese pro Zhang Lian-wei. The course is nicely defined by palms and leechee trees, but don't let the beauty distract you from the strategically positioned water hazards and very quick putting greens.
