The Breakers - Rees Jones Course

About the club

William Byrd was responsible for the initial layout at Breakers West, to which Rees Jones later gave additional length and his name. Though overshadowed by Jones, Byrd's work quite successfully extended the holes through the (not overly distracting) housing development with which the club is associated. Located in West Palm Beach, a little over an hour outside Miami to the north, the Breakers takes its name from the fabled Palm Beach hotel that was once the home-away-from-home for the Hollywood set in Florida. Like many newer courses, the Jones has the length to handle any pro who comes to town, but allowances are made for lesser lights with a range of five teeing options. In a less contemporary turn, on the other hand, the opening holes here ease a player into a round before becoming increasingly more difficult, and the course continues to be an intriguing test of golf to the end.
