Golf Club d'Hossegor
About the club
Among celebrated golf course architects, John Morrison is best known for his work in continental Europe, especially France, just as Harry Colt designed courses in England, Charles Alison in Japan, and Alister MacKenzie in Australia and the US. Morrison designed Hossegor in the southwest of the country with help from British Open Champion Arnaud Massy. While respecting Morrison's vision, American architect Cabell Robinson added refinements that have made Hossegor less daunting for the average player without removing its challenges for tournament players; indeed the fifteenth hole remains especially tricky despite Robinson's efforts. It remains to be seen whether Robinson's work will be viewed as a triumph or as desecration, but all can agree that Hossegor offers an enchanting, very even parkland course redolent of pine smoke. Just ask José-Maria Olazabal, who loved to play at Hossegor when he lived in the area.
