About the club
Fontainebleau, constructed in 1909, is one more of Tom Simpson's early designs. The peaceful setting in the shadow of a large population center here is reminiscent of the Swinley Forest Club outside London. The Forest of Fontainebleau provides the setting for this private club, which enjoys excellent drainage owing to its sandy soil. Each hole has a distinct setting amid the mixed deciduous woodlands, where deer and other fauna are sometimes seen. Fred Hawtree made some controversial alterations in the Sixties, and in recent years the attempt has been made to restore Simpson's vision for the course, in particular the dunes and bunkering. Measuring a mere 6000 meters, the course is impressive not for its length but for its balance; thus the diminutive greens are approached from proportionately narrow fairways. Average players will have no problem making the par 4s, and the course in general is enjoyable for all golfers.
