Ogeechee Golf Club at The Ford Plantation
About the club
The historic grounds of Ogeechee, near where the Ogeechee River empties into the ocean, not far outside Savannah, were once part of a plantation where rice was grown in the 1700s and 1800s. The plantation went out of use after the Civil War and was purchased by Henry Ford in 1920s as part of his plan to create a vast rubber plantation. That project didn't pan out, and in time the property came to serve as a wintertime retreat for Ford and other movers and shakers in American industry, such as the Rockefellers and Duponts. In the 1980s, the land became the site of a gated residential community; Pete Dye designed the course for the development in 1987. The front nine are routed among ponds, while the back plays in the manner of a links. There is little relief to the topography, but Dye wisely chose to avoid artificial mounding.
