Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club

About the club

None other than Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison designed the original, links-style course at Sea Island, Georgia, during a trip to the US in the late Twenties. Colt in classic fashion followed the lie of the land amid the marshy vegetation and fescue right on the shoreline. The site is beautiful, but is exposed to the wind. Some badly needed refurbishment was carried out around the turn of the millennium by Tom Fazio, whose work shows reverence for the historic layout that was entrusted to him. The resulting holes are a blend of classic Colt and Alison and Fazio's own insights. The bunkering does now more resemble the "great flashes of sand" (in Ben Crenshaw's words) we associate with Alister MacKenzie rather than the pot bunkers that Colt preferred. Sea Island is home to the McGladrey Classic, a FedEx Cup event on the PGA Tour that was established by Davis Love III.
