About the club
Local lore has it that the first golf games around Waterville, on the Ring of Kerry, were played by engineers working on the first transatlantic cable; in any case, the Waterville Golf Club entered into an association with the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1900. American architect Tom Fazio is responsible for the shape of today's course; his extensive renovations added character to what had been a somewhat lackluster front nine and vastly enhanced the final holes. The resulting layout threads its way among dunes as if it were part of the native landscape. The frequent gusts mean that players must take care to flight the ball if they hope to keep it in play. Since the course is fairly long, most players will want to play at 6200 meters or less for a pleasurable experience. There are in addition on several of the fairway bunkers strategic considerations regarding the second shot.
