Get ready for a thrill ride if you visit Sugarloaf, a rugged golf experience if ever there was one. Not for the casual golfer, the course here is too rugged to be walked; your cart will cross the Carrabassett River half a dozen times just on the back nine, and the topography varies dramatically. Players should be prepared for the possibility of losing a fair number of balls. Holes tend to slant one way or the other, and include a trio of par 5 double doglegs. Owing to the climate and the surroundings, maintenance is a constant struggle, but Sugarloaf really shines from mid-summer to mid-autumn. The most memorable hole would have to be the par 3 11th, which descends a full forty yards from the tee to the green with a forced carry over the river. The whole course is intriguing, and it definitely rewards repeated play.
