Tom Fazio earned praise for working with his uncle George Fazio to create the National, and three decades later he returned to Canada to design the Coppinwood on a stunning, undeveloped site with wide vistas. Beginning with the first hole, the designer's signature flashed-sand bunkering contribute to the beauty of the place; this par 5 extends beside a gorge down to a slightly raised green. The rest of the front nine are fine, but things get interesting with the par 3, 244-yard 11th, with its green set in a broad rock hollow. The following run of the holes is among the finest in the country. In particular, the par 4 12th moves down and then up to the green, while the par 5 15th plays downward to a green facing out over a cliff. So Fazio delivers, though some critics suggest that he might have done better given his incredible raw material.
