Old at Saucon Valley Country Club
About the club
British architect Herbert Strong created the initial course at Saucon Valley Country Club in the early 1920s, and though two other full courses and a short six are now open for play at the club, that first course, now known as the Old, remains the premier attraction. Over the years renovations have been undertaken by William Gordon, Perry Maxwell and, in the mid 2000s, by Tom Fazio's associate Tom Marzloft. The Old has been the site of half a dozen major tournaments over the years, from the US Amateur in 1951 to the 2009 US Women's Open. The layout saves the best for last, the challenging 18th with its obscured second shot against the slope. Maintenance is superb, and the selective thinning of the trees ensures that the lovely scenery remains visible. The regal clubhouse is set with columns and offers fine dining and a great pro shop.
