Rocky Crest Golf Club
About the club
Built in 2001, this aptly named club was one of the earliest in Canada to utilize fully the native stone in its layout, and it remains for many the signature accomplishment of designer Thomas McBroom. The opening and closing holes are carefully situated on level, marshy ground, and the rest of the holes are threaded across the ridge of exposed rock after which the course is called. The leitmotif of rock and stone is particularly in evidence on the par 5 6th, the 563 yards of which extend across a granite valley from the tee to the fairway. These "rocky" elements recur throughout the course, both for strategic play and for beauty; the fairway of the 16th, to give another example, is interrupted by a huge boulder. Other courses in the region have since followed suit with the rock theme, but McBroom's course remains the finest example of this kind of design.
