Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club
About the club
The Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club took on its somewhat unwieldy name when Royal Johannesburg purchased the Kensington Golf Club in 1998. The Kensington course had already earned a reputation for competitive play, and the new management embarked on a thorough program of restoration of the Royal Johannesburg itself. Thus the putting greens were brought up to modern standards, and the water on the course was improved. Measuring close to 7000 meters, the parkland course has imposing length, though at more than a mile above sea level balls travel significantly farther. This fact makes possible such holes as the pair of extremely long par 4s that are the 10th and 11th. The latter, which plays downhill to a green that is defended by a water hazard, is probably the signature hole. The East is the championship course here, having attracted South African Opens and Amateur Championships.
