About the club

The Woodmead Most golf clubs have a membership of only a few hundred at most, but there are exceptions: Royal Sydney's single course serves 5000 members, and the Country Club Johannesburg serves 10,000 with two courses, though a large portion of the members of these mega-clubs is to be sure from outside the region. The Country Club must be distinguished from the Royal Johannesburg, which hosts the South African Open. The Woodmead is the earlier of the club's two layouts, having been created in 1970 by the Hawtree architecture firm. Major renovations were undertaken after the turn of the millennium that have brought the facilities and the greens in particular up to modern standards. A system of dams and channels keeps the grounds irrigated in every season and is in play throughout. The Woodmead's sister course, the Rocklands, was created after a neighboring property was acquired by the club.
