Real Club de Golf Sotogrande
About the club
Sotogrande was the original home of golf on Spain's Costa del Sol, and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande was one of its first clubs. And whereas many of the recent course complexes in the area have left something to be desired in terms of style and playability, the course here retains its traditional charm. It also enjoys a fine location only a hundred and fifty yards from the shore. Robert Trent Jones created the design here—in fact, Sotogrande was his first eighteen in Europe—in 1964, with a brief to attract major competitions, and sure enough the 1966 Spanish Open was played here. Water and bunkering are the main challenges; the rough, on the other hand, is not much of a problem. Those fortunate enough to receive an invitation to play at this members-only establishment will certainly appreciate a true test of golf in such elegant surroundings.
