San Roque Club - Old Course
About the club
Dave Thomas, with help from Tony Jacklin, created the original layout—designated "Old" after the construction of a second course—at The San Roque Club, which is situated in the south of Spain's Costa del Sol region near Sotogrande. Their course, which was completed in the late Eighties, measures almost 6500 meters, and was deemed good enough for the 2005 Spanish Open (though the club's management moved the location to their new, Perry Dye-designed course for the 2006 and 2007 Opens). The setting, on raised ground with panoramic vistas on every side, was the former property the Domecqs, whose family business was sherry; their manor house is now the clubhouse. The opening nine holes are absolutely flawless and the back nine are nearly as good. And one can hardly fault the design for the somewhat cramped quarters in the middle of the holes coming home, which are caused by a natural knoll.
