Prairie Oaks Ranch

About the club

The ranch is located in North Central Texas about 30 miles south of the Red River. The upland prairies are filled with tall grasses and a wide variety of wildflowers--all able to withstand only 30 inches of annual rainfall and searing summer temperatures. Originally the property was five separate homesteads that eventually become a single 968 acre ranch. Several shallow oil wells dotted the property and cattle grazing kept it going even after the owners moved away and their houses disappeared. In the last 50 years the biggest change was the construction of a 40 acre, private lake. Built by the Soil Conservations Service in 1969, the lake anchors the lower end of the ranch and is fed by Denton Creek. The dam is 40 feet high and over 1,600 feet long.
