Bedlingtonshire Golf Club
About the club
Bedlingtonshire Golf Club was founded in 1972 by Bedlingtonshire Urban District Council. The Council saw the need for additional sporting facilities in the town and purchased 127 acres of land (100 acres of which had been opencast mined) from the National Coal Board who restored, landscaped and fenced the site. The course was designed by Frank Pennink. In 2001 the members took over the running of the Club from Wansbeck District Council and in 2008 purchased the Club outright from the Council. In the last 10 years the Club has invested some £400,000 on course and clubhouse improvements. In 2011 the Club hosted the Northumberland County Championship which is a measure of the progress made by the Club. Situated 1/2mile south of Bedlington town centre on the A1068, the course is easily accessible. The course is parkland measuring 6813 yards, par 73, standard scratch 73, and can prove a real test of golf, particularly in windy conditions. All but 3 holes were part of the former opencast coal site. A large number of conifer and deciduous trees and shrubs have been planted which have now matured giving beautiful tree lined fairways. The course demands good straight drives and accurate iron play into tight and bunkered greens.
