When golfers think of Ireland, Scotland, England or Wales, they tend to think of the links courses where the game began; but the fact is that not all the great courses in this part of the world happen to be links. The course at Belvoir Park Golf Club is one of this less celebrated kind of courses. Laid out by Harry S. Colt in 1927, it features the famed designer's signature smooth lines and general concern that his courses meld naturally into their surroundings. So it is that Belvoir Park follows the topography of the landscape outside Belfast over slopes and scrub ground and among the mature trees. Even if he had had the know-how and resources to introduce relief artificially into the setting, Colt would probably not have even considered doing so. Nor did he need to: his short holes are simply outstanding, in particular the 16th.
