East Devon Golf Club
About the club
Century-old East Devon is one of the gorgeous clubs by the ocean that take the place of links courses in the southwest of England. Henry Colt, James Braid and Herbert Fowler are among the pioneering architects who contributed to the design. The course is situated on a ridgeline outside the town of Budleigh Salterton to the west, where the birches and conifers provide at least some measure of shelter from the winds that blow in off the sea. Broad fairways and ample room generally also help to compensate for the breezy conditions. Among the vintage touches at East Devon are a few blind holes, a kind of play hated by championship players that is therefore not to be found in any contemporary layout, but is quite pleasurable for everyday golfers. The historic and charming clubhouse features an open patio area for taking in the sun in the late afternoon.
