Formby Golf Club
About the club
Formby is among the excellent clubs nestled along a thirty-mile span of coastline outside Liverpool to the north that is the heartland of British golf. The courses here are uniformly classic links, with the characteristic rolling dunes. The course at Formby is distinctive in the area for being partially wooded, so that it suggests in some ways the heathland golfing in the south. Famed architect Harry Colt is partly responsible for the design, and Donald Steel has made some needed adjustments. The ocean is constantly in play; indeed the waves have claimed a couple of the holes here as the coastline has shifted over the past couple decades. The course serves as a regular location for the Amateur Championship, though its relative remoteness has kept it from hosting the kinds of Open Championship events that are held at such comparable courses as St. Annes, Royal Lytham and Royal Birkdale.
