Greenock Golf Club - Championship
About the club
The 18 hole course (known locally as "the big course") was redesigned in 1924 by former Open Champion James Braid, and it is doubtful if any of todays course architects could make better use of the land than Braid. Not long by modern standards at 5850 yrds, Greenock is no pushover, tight fairways, and small undulating greens will test players at every level. The terrain is semi-moorland, with many tree lined fairways, and the odd burn and bunker to to catch the slack shot. The first five holes are played over undulating ground, the short uphill sixth takes the player to the upper part of the course. The seventh tee affords players what must surely be one of the best views from any course in Scotland. The long difficult par 3 seventh, is the start of a tough stretch of six holes that can make or break a good score. The attractive downhill thirteenth, set among a cluster of bunkers, moves the player back into the heart of the course. A couple of long par fours and a great last hole are the finish of what will be a very enjoyable round of golf.
