Helmsdale Golf Club
About the club
Overlooking its famous salmon river - on which His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is a regular angler - the nine hole Helmsdale course will give you a quaint change from the demands of seaside links. Facing south on the hillside of the Strath of Kildonan, the nine holes wind their way through bracken, gorse and broom and are a picture in the springtime and early summer. The shortness of the course at just 1860 yards adds to its enjoyment and accuracy, not length, is the key to laying many of the varied holes. A gentle touch is definitely required at the second hole. 87 yards to the pin and just 5 yards further, out of bounds. The ninth tee is the most prominent point on the course providing a panoramic view out to sea in the east and to the west the gold diggings of Kildonan. The greens are improving on the golf course now after suffering from a lack of maintenance over the last few years - as you can see below on the 9th hole we have good grass coverage now on all the greens. One year ago as you can see from the shots below we had an unplayable surface and the ninth green was a typical example of the poor state.
