About the club

The great early age of course architecture in England did not begin with Harry S. Colt but with Willie Park Jr., who like his father was an early Open Championship victor. Park's Old Course at Sunningdale, at which Colt served as the first secretary, is probably his most famous creation; he also laid out Nottinghamshire's Hollinwell, which is equally impressive, if not equally renowned. At Notts as at Sunningdale, Park had the benefit of superb terrain, and he put it to use. Sherwood Forest is nearby, and stunning vistas can be glimpsed to the south from a ridge on the back nine; oaks and birches, in addition to tall vegetation and heather, contribute to the setting. The sandy soil creates the feeling of a links. Notts continues to attract championship play, though it has found itself less in demand as more new complexes are being built in the area.
