Liphook Golf Club
About the club
The course at Liphook has had to contend with the major arterial of the Portsmouth-London A3 since it was constructed in 1922. It is apparently the only layout by Arthur Croome, who is better known for his prolific writing about golf. The look of the modern course is the work of Tom Simpson. Liphook resembles the Berkshire and Surrey courses in its modest length (a little under 5500 meters), sandy soil and the evergreens and heather fringing the fairways. Unlike many other parkland layouts, Liphook quickly drains and firms up after downpours, so the course offers fine golf in every season. The holes are well distributed over the grounds, and feature fairly tight fairways leading to diminutive greens with carefully positioned bunkers that will demand at least two shots to the green for those who get snagged. Any golfer fortunate enough to enjoy a round here will leave wanting more.
