About the club
St. Andrews and Carnoustie are good examples of clubs that share the same course; Musselborough is another. Montrose falls into this category as well, sharing the Medal with Monifieth. Golf is reported to have been played here as far back as 1562 on what was the property of the Earl of Montrose. The course currently in use was designed in the early 1900s by Willie Park Jr., whose task, like that of James Braid at Monifieth, will have been to add definition to an age-old layout. The land is rugged, but it makes for fine golf; the ground is spongy but firm. The routing leads through tufts of native grass and brush among towering dunes, and is set with large bunkers. The course is of modest, and would be fairly easy should the wind ever die down. The club regularly hosts qualifying rounds for the Open and Europro Tour events.
