Pennard Golf Club
About the club
The original layout at Pennard Golf Club was created in the 1890s, and James Braid and C. K. Cotton both contributed to the one played today. The site on Wales' Gower Peninsula is both lovely, with sweeping vistas of Oxwhich and Three Cliff Bays, and historic, being home to a number of crumbling castles and former smugglers' dens. The course is an authentic links, with the stiff ocean breezes to match. Measuring a mere 5787 meters, its challenges are strategic: contoured fairways play to tough approaches to slanted greens. When the wind dies down, though, the course is fun for all, since less accomplished players have a variety of tee positions from which to choose so they won't have a trek just to reach the fairways. Apart from a fairly recent clubhouse (which has surprisingly few windows given the beauty of the surroundings), everything here is quaint and traditional.
