This venerable and scenic course has undergone very little in the way of major alterations since it opened toward the end of the nineteenth century, though shifts in shoreline have narrowed the strip of ground, framed by imposing sand hills and tidal marsh land, on which it lies. The terrain demands that players take into account such factors as wind, precipitation and especially the tide tables, since particularly high tides or waves can sever the road out to the clubhouse, while the tides generally create an every-changing backdrop to the holes, such as the 8th and 9th, that border on the marshes. With a modest length of just over 5900 meters, the main challenges come from the wind and the layout itself. Standouts among the intriguing and idiosyncratic holes include blind approach and tiny green of the 3rd and the shared fairway for the 1st and 18th.
