Saint George's Hill Golf Club
About the club
Though the area is identified with Harry S. Colt, the holes at St. George's Hill were actually laid out by local architect George Tarrant, who was one of the first developers to link golf with high-end housing, though he himself ended up dying a pauper. Here Tarrant positioned the fairways next to Edwardian-style villas, which lasted until the 1990s, when they demolished, in spite of remaining in good condition, to make way for some truly monumental mansions. The Red and Blue combination brings together a short course and a full-sized one, both of which are built on rolling ground characterized by an abundance of vegetation, from evergreens and birches to heather and enormous rhododendron bushes. The holes are oases amid the woods and the estates. Be prepared for something of a climb from the lower holes to the green for the final hole next to the clubhouse.
