Saunton Golf Club - The East Course
About the club
Harry Vardon won the Open Championship half a dozen times before retiring with the express aim of playing Saunton to the end of his days. It is only the club's remote location, near Burnham-on-Sea but away from any major population center, that has prevented it from hosting Open events. The club takes its name from the Saunton Sands beach along which the course is laid out. The East is an authentic links course, set as it is amid ancient sand dunes. Unlike many older courses, Saunton does not greet players with a few easy holes: the opening stretch of four holes is perhaps the most challenging on the course, being especially subject to the winds off the ocean. The only concession to the demanding environs is the way that the greens are somewhat protected. Saunton definitely merits inclusion in any golf tour centered on Lancashire and Scotland.
