Seaton Carew Golf Club
About the club
Seaton Carew offers some excellent golf in an unexpected setting. Originally constructed near a contemporary resort in 1874, the present site looks out at venerable factory facilities. None other than Alister MacKenzie is responsible for creating a golfer's dream here when he prepared the site to host a major tournament in 1925. Some two decades later, Frank Pennink added an additional four holes, and the resulting twenty-two remain in commission. The layout is fairly level but is punctuated by dunes and native vegetation. Everything is out in the open on the front nine, but things get tricky on the back nine, which demand powerful, accurate drives, sometimes into adverse breezes. The signature hole would probably have to be the 17th with its strategic approach to a raised green. Seaton Carew is proof positive that excellent golf can be had even in some of the less affluent parts of England.
