Silloth on Solway Golf Club
About the club
Silloth, just outside Carlisle to the south, was designed by Willie Park Jr. in 1892, and a bit later benefitted from additional work by the triumvirate of James Braid, J. H. Taylor and Harry Vardon. The result is a fairly pristine links by the ocean, laid out over sand but lacking in dunes. Native fescue, gorse and heather compose the rough, and make things difficult for those struggling with accuracy. The grounds are sufficiently spacious that length could be added to the course for tournament play, but there seems little point given the relative isolation Silloth. Nevertheless, a qualifying round for the Open is played here, as have been a couple of recent English Ladies Championships, renewing a tradition for the course, since Charlotte "Cecil" Leitch came from Silloth. This typical nine out and nine back course is almost always open owing to the protection its holes provide from the weather.
