Southerness Golf Club
About the club
Located on an out-of-the-way bluff on the coast of Solway looking over the sea toward the Lake District in Britain, Southerness is not somewhere you would expect to come across compelling oceanside golf, but anyone who plays a round will soon be singing its praises. One of a small number of modern links, the original course was laid out by Mackenzie Ross in the mid-twentieth century while he was engaged at Turnberry. At just over 600 meters, the course is of modest length, though it does feature a number of par 4s measuring in excess of 400 yards, among them the outstanding 12th. Other good holes include a pair of short par 5s that more accomplished players can reach in two, but that may lead others into trouble. By the 8th the course has really hit its stride as it makes its way around the beach where a lighthouse comes into view.
