Campbeltown, Scotland
The Machrihanish Golf Club
About the club
It takes some work to get to Machrihanish, nearly 150 miles from Glasgow, but the drive down to the tip of the Mull of Kintyre is lovely and the golf is superb. Located just outside Campbeltown, the site offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The club was founded as The Kintyre in 1876, but changed to the more sonorous moniker twelve years later. At 5908 meters, the layout is not long, but it packs in plenty of enjoyment. The 1st is known as the Battery and is widely recognized as one of the finest opening holes anywhere; the fairway plays along the shoreline, so be careful teeing off or you may find yourself taking your second shot from a tidal pool. Towering dunes surround the greens, from which the ocean and surrounding hills are visible. The remoteness means that this first-class links course is almost never crowded.
